“You don’t need to worry about that at all.”

Oct 7, 2025

A small moment that felt huge. The other day at Caffè Luxxe in Santa Monica with cars honking, people rushing, headlines screaming, I was gathering my tray to bus it. A server leaned in and said quietly, You don’t need to worry about that at all.” In that instant, something in me exhaled—I felt sheltered and held.

Contrast that with another night: mediocre service, a handheld checkout preset to a 25% tip. That automatic nudge felt tone-deaf, as if my experience didn’t matter. There are moments when service feels effortless—hot food, steady pacing, genuine care, and gratitude rises naturally. The difference isn’t the transaction; it’s the presence behind it.

Recently, I had a breast biopsy. Understandably nervous, I was met by Watana, a medical assistant who sprinkled quiet magic over the entire experience—a warm gown, a blanket tucked just right, a steady hand that said you’re safe here. She likely sees hundreds of patients a week, yet somehow made me feel singularly cared for. No tip. No recognition. Just kindness—and it meant everything.

In a world where people bump, honk, and barely glance, we’re starving for those “held” moments. Being seen and heard has a measurable impact on well-being.

So here’s to the servers, baristas, medical assistants, and strangers who offer presence. May we all see more, soften more, and remember how much the smallest gestures can hold.
